Banned Books Week 2018

Your Books (1)The #ReedyLibrary is proud to bring you Banned Books Week! This is the national book community’s annual celebration of the freedom to read. The 2018 celebration will be held this week and next week in our library. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982 according to the American Library Association.

Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week also brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek, to publish, to read, and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. For more information about Frequently Challenged Books Click Here!

By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read. This week or next week stop by the #ReedyLibrary and pick up a challenged book. The Reedy Library Club is proud to sponsor the books on display all over the library, so come see why books have been challenged.
